The Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain, is a building that remains unfinished to this day. Construction of the basilica began in 1883, and work is currently progressing with a target completion date of 2026.
Its original architect, Antoni Gaudí, knew very well that he would never live to see the project completed. Regarding this, he famously said:
“My client is not in a hurry.”
Once completed, the basilica’s spire is expected to become the tallest religious structure in Europe. However, Gaudí deliberately designed the spire to be about three feet (approximately one meter) lower than the surrounding mountains. He believed that no human creation should stand higher than the natural world created by God.
