Book Review
Benjamin L. Gladd, who teaches New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary, offers remarkable insight into the Gospel of Luke, capturing the essence of biblical theology in fewer than 200 pages. To be honest, while most pastors may have the desire to read a 500-page biblical theology of Luke, we must also admit that a 200-page book is far more accessible, practically helpful, and, in reality, more likely to be read.
This book is part of a highly beneficial series edited by Thomas R. Schreiner and Brian S. Rosner. Other recent titles in this series include Union with Christ, Walking in the Spirit: A Theology of Ephesians by Benjamin L. Merkle; The Mission of the Triune God: A Theology of Acts by Patrick Schreiner; and The Beginning of the Gospel: A Theology of Mark by Peter Orr. All of these books will be of tremendous help to preachers engaged in ministry.
“The believer has been spiritually renewed, is awaiting Christ’s return, and is being shaped by God into the restored image of his Son. As Christians today, how do we apply these insights to daily life? Believers are still battling indwelling sin, and this struggle will continue until the day of resurrection. Yet we must recognize that we are new creations. The Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts and gives us the power to overcome sin and to please God in every area of life. God also gives us the assurance that we have already begun to participate in the new heavens and the new earth. Life on this earth is connected to the eternal state we will one day inhabit. From here and now, we must begin to live in step with the rhythm of the new creation so that when we enter the new heavens and new earth, we will be able to continue that life—loving God and one another more deeply and richly.”
