Theological Study in the Age of AI: What Must the Preacher Hold Fast To?

Professor  Sung Jin Lim

AI provides tremendous assistance in the preacher’s theological study. It can organize doctrinal topics, compare the views of major theologians, and summarize complex theological debates with remarkable efficiency. In this sense, AI can serve as an excellent research assistant for theological inquiry.

However, theological study is far more than the collection of information. Theology is not merely a matter of knowledge but of confession. While AI can present a wide range of theological perspectives, it cannot determine which interpretation is most faithful to the teaching of Scripture as a whole and to the church’s historic confession of faith. Ultimately, theological discernment remains the responsibility of the preacher.

In the age of AI, a clear theological identity is more essential than ever. As multiple theological viewpoints become instantly accessible, preachers must continually examine the confessional foundation on which they stand and the doctrinal tradition they have inherited. The purpose of theological study is not simply to make sermons more intellectually sophisticated, but to make them biblically faithful and theologically sound.

If biblical exegesis provides the framework of a sermon, theological study gives that framework its direction and identity. A sermon without careful exegesis lacks a solid foundation, while a sermon without theological reflection loses its sense of direction. It may explain the biblical text accurately, yet fail to show how that text fits within God’s redemptive plan and the church’s confession of faith.

Therefore, while AI can provide theological resources, it cannot form the preacher’s theology. Preachers must continually be shaped by Scripture, the church’s confession of faith, and the theological tradition to which they belong. Only then will AI become not a source of confusion, but a valuable tool for building sermons that are both deeper and more firmly grounded in the truth.
